Russian diplomatic mission to return to Baghdad soon

Russian diplomats are to return to Baghdad already in the near future.

Talking to reporters here today, the Russian Foreign Ministry's spokesman Alexander Yakovenko noted that Russia will send its diplomats, who had worked at its Baghdad embassy, and who had left as a result of the war, back soon.

The decision to return the diplomats can be explained by the fact that our embassy has resumed its work in full volume, as well as by the need to ensure our presence in that country, Yakovenko explained. First of all, this decision is motivated by the need to assist Russian companies in their efforts to return to the Iraqi market, Yakovenko went on to say.

At the same time, we proceed from specific provisions of the UN Security Council's resolution No. 1483 on Iraq, which gives Russia every right to facilitate Iraq's post-war reconstruction on a par with other countries.

We hope that occupation authorities on Iraqi territory will guarantee the diplomatic status and safety of foreign diplomatic missions in Baghdad in line with international-law norms, Yakovenko noted in conclusion.
