Georgian leader to participate in celebrations of St. Petersburg's 300th anniversary

Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze will fly to St. Petersburg on Friday morning to participate in the celebrations of the city's 300th anniversary.

The president will also take part in the CIS summit in Petersburg, Shevardnadze's press secretary Takha Imnadze told journalists in Tbilisi on Thursday.

According to Imnadze, the Georgian President is to meet with his Armenian counterpart Robert Kocharyan to discuss bilateral cooperation including the restoration of railway communications from Russia to Armenia via Abkhazia (the rebellious republic in Georgia).

"Tbilisi sticks to its former standpoint and considers that this problem can be solved in accordance with the agreement achieved by the Russian and Georgian Presidents in Sochi," Imnadze said.

The programme of Shevardnadze's visit to St. Petersburg does not imply other bilateral meetings with CIS leaders.
