2 Little Beasts From St. Petersburg Zoo Move to Moscow

A couple of Indian martens, carnivorous mammals of the weasel family, gave birth to cubs in the St. Petersburg Zoo, Natalia Popova, a curator of the zoo collection, told RIA Novosti on Friday.

According to her, the cubs were born not long ago and the zoo workers still don't know how many cubs came into the world. The anxious mother does not allow them to approach her cubs. They can only hear the cubs squeaking.

When the cubs grow stronger, they will be taken away from their mother. Two Indian marten cubs will go to the Moscow Zoo.

Indians martens are not the only happy parents in the St. Petersburg Zoo. Ruffed lemurs recently gave birth to cubs, as well. Only one strongest cub was left with the parents. Zoo workers are taking care of the others. They will be also exchanged for other animals. Russia has few zoos with lemurs living and reproducing, therefore the St. Petersburg Zoo is convinced that the coming exchange will be a success, Popova said.
