Five servicemen killed in fight against gunmen on Russian-Georgian border

Five servicemen of Russia's Federal Border Service (FPS) were killed and four were wounded in Chechnya's Itum-Kali district on the Khangakhoi pass during clashes with a gang of gunmen, reported the Headquarters of the Joint Grouping of Troops in Chechnya on Monday.

According to the latest information, the clashes which began on Saturday on the Khangakhoi pass between servicemen of the 14th border unit of the North Caucasian regional FPS administration and the special task force of the Russian Defence Ministry against a gang of gunmen numbering up to 60 men continued on Sunday. During the fighting, the frontier guards managed to disperse the bandits and to prevent them from penetrating Russia from Georgia.

According to the military, the gunmen lost 6 men. At present the frontier guards continue to block the passes and mountain paths. Paratroopers and special frontier forces are being deployed to the site of the fighting. The police of the Itum-Kali district has been put in combat readiness.

The situation in the district is in full control, it was noted at the headquarters of the Joint Group of Troops in the North Caucasus.
