The US to release 140 Guantanamo prisoners

The United States government is planning to release at least 140 prisoners held in the military base of US Navy in Guantanamo island, Cuba (information of Times magazine).

There is 660 people from 44 countries in the prison now. All of them were captured in Afghanistan and Pakistan during the “Unbreakable Freedom” operation against Taliban and al-Q’aeda. All the people held in Guantanamo are seen by the US as “military opponents”, not captives, what lets them holding the detainees for as long as they want.

The States started discussions about releasing approximately one fifth of the detainees, and now negotiate the conditions.

As Times informs, the big group to be released now consists of those suspects, whose cases are the “easiest”. It is not clear whether the released detainees will receive freedom in their own countries or they are to be jailed back again. Negotiation details, list of the countries negotiating or approximate date of release are not voiced.

Before the United States released groups of 15-20 detainees from “Delta” camp a few times, sending them back to their homelands. As Pentagon representative said, those people “either do not represent any danger to the USA security, or there is no need for them to stay in the camp”
