Gibraltar: NO to Spanish sovereignty

The British and Spanish governments have pledged to solve the question over the sovereignty of Gibraltar, which Britain annexed from Spain three hundred years ago during its wars against Louis XIV of France. However, the question is not what London and Madrid decide, but rather what the Gibraltarians are prepared to accept.

Gibraltarian Prime Minister Peter Carruana stated that his 30,000 inhabitants will vote a resounding “NO” in any referendum on shared sovereignty with Spain. He declared in na interview to Sky News, “It is more probable for Hell to freeze over than for the people of Gibraltar to accept Spanish sovereignty, in whatever form this may take”.
