Georgia Plans to Make 'Small Contribution' to Reconstruction of Iraq - 7 April, 2003

Georgia can also 'make its own small contribution' to the process of Iraq's post-war reconstruction, according to Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze, who was speaking today in his traditional interview with Georgian state radio. Shevardnadze did not say exactly what this contribution would be.

Shevardnadze also stressed that events in Iraq had confirmed the need to create new international institutions. He added that it was necessary to reform the UN and 'increase the effectiveness' of the Security Council. 'Unfortunately, this organ is no longer capable of carrying out the functions of the planet's main guarantor of peace,' said the Georgian President.
