Russia to defend Arctic with missile systems

Russia will use the Tor-M2 surface-to-air missile system in the Arctic. An order for corresponding chassis based on the Russian all-terrain vehicle has been already placed on the public procurement website. The chassis of special tractor unit will be needed to work in the Arctic and Extreme North.

The tractor unit represents a tracked vehicle DT-30PM. The caterpillar track allows the equipment to move across rough terrain, swamp, or snow. Due to tracked vehicle, the surface-to-air missile system Tor will be able to operate under severe conditions of the Arctic.

Tor is designed to cover important facilities from adversary's aviation. It was deployed as early as in 1986 and became the first close combat system with vertical missile launch. It is noted that the surface-to-air missile system is capable of downing any target at a distance of 12km, being at heights of 10m to 6km.

As Pravda.Ru reported, the special UN commission expressed its readiness to consider Russia's claim to increase shelf in the Arctic.
