Russia to declassify US military satellites

Russia plans to expose a catalogue of near-Earth objects, a member of the Russian delegation at the 59th session of the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, Victor Shilin claimed. As he explained, the Russian service would be similar to catalogue of the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), but it will include not only civil satellites and space debris, but also information which does not appear in open data of the US Space Command. Along with military objects, NORAD closes data on defencive satellites of its allies, namely France, Germany, Israel and Japan. While the Russian military satellites are present in the catalogue. Today Moscow proposes to unite national data bases in a single catalogue which would be available to any country that conducts space activities. The system could inform about potential dangerous events for spacecraft and objects on the ground, as well as warn about possible threats for missile launching. The initiative was backed by China, and opposed by the US. As Mr Shilin said, 'the Americans don't have to worry about declassification of orbital data of their military spacecraft - it will happen in any case'.
