Doomsday seed vault unsealed because of Syria war

The authorities of Svalbard, the archipelago, on which the Global Seed Vault is located, has unsealed its stock of seeds for the first time in history. The vault was built in 2006 to somehow protect mankind from extinction in case of global disasters. The facility will be able to store tons of seeds of 200 years. The first catastrophe, for which the vault was unsealed, was the war in Syria.

The Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas, which was located in Syria's Aleppo, had long ago moved to Beirut. Botanists had their own unique collection that suffered as a result of the conflict between Bashar Assad and the "Islamic State." To continue the work, Syrian specialists need 116 thousand of seed samples that can grow in dry areas.
