Donetsk People's Republic lifts the moratorium on the death penalty

The People's Council of the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) lifted the moratorium on the execution of death sentences, the press service of the parliament reported.

"In view of the need to protect the sovereignty, territorial integrity and interests of the Donetsk People's Republic in the current military-political situation, the draft law proposes to recognize part 9 of article 202 of the Penal Code as invalid," said Elena Shishkina, chairman of the People's Council Committee on Criminal and Administrative Legislation.

Thus, the provisions on the death penalty come into force from the day the law is promulgated.

In mid-April, the British Aiden Aslin and Sean Pinner, as well as the Moroccan Saadoun Ibrahim, surrendered in Mariupol.

On June 9, the DPR Supreme Court sentenced them to death by firing squad. All three pleaded guilty to Ukraine's armed aggression aimed at seizing power in the republic. Aslin also pleaded guilty under the article "Training in order to carry out terrorist activities." All the defendants filed cassation appeals.
