Sergey Lavrov, head of the Russian Foreign Ministry, claimed that the outside invasion with the purpose of democratization turned Iraq and Libya into a chaos, and brought these countries to the brink of extinction.

Political reforms in Syria should be promoted, but not repeating the mistakes of Iraq and Libya, he stated.

Lavrov explained in his interview to RT, that we want "to make sure that whatever political reforms are necessary must be promoted. But promoted in a way which would not repeat the mistakes of Iraq, the mistakes of Libya, when outside intervention with the purpose of democratization of these countries turned out to be an invitation for chaos, an invitation of huge dangers risking the disappearance of these countries, and splitting these countries into three, four, and five smaller enclaves".

According to the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry, "our position is that priority number one at this stage is not allowing the terrorists to ruin the Middle East as we know it, to ruin an area, which gave birth to three great religions".
