Football fan killed in fierce fight in Sweden

The football match between Swedish major league teams Djurgården and Helsingborg was interrupted for 42 minutes when the audience learned that a supporter of Djurgårdens was brutally beaten and died of serious head injuries. The match was held in southern Sweden, on the stadium of the city of Helsingborg.

As soon as people on the stands learned the news about the death of the fan, the crowd surged onto the field. Djurgårdens fans, who remained on their seats, shouted: "Murderers, murderers!" The referee sent the players to the locker room.

Police officers said that the victim, a 44-year-old resident of Stockholm, was wounded overnight in clashes between groups of fans. Five people were taken to hospital with injuries of varying severity; three fans were arrested and another 33 temporarily detained.

Sweden's Minister of Sport, Lena Lilerot Adelson, said that the death of the fan was "a black day in the history of Swedish football."
