Russia may ban the cultivation and growth of genetically modified plants and animals. An adequate bill has already been submitted to the State Duma. The explanatory note says that the document was prepared to improve state regulation in the field of genetic engineering, the Rossiyskaya Gazeta wrote.
The document says that importers of such organisms and products will be required to undergo registration procedures in Russia, whereas the government will have the right to prohibit the import of GMOs. The bill also provides for administrative liability for the use of GMOs.
The bill also regulates procedures to create a network of laboratories to identify genetically modified organisms.
