World's Longest Automated Unmanned Metro Opens in Dubai

Over 280,000 passengers used the Dubai Metro during the first week of its operation in the amazing futuristic city. The metro became a totally new kind of transportation for the countries of the Arabian Peninsula.

The inflow of passengers during the first days of the work of the metro, which was built on the ground, above the ground and under the water of the Persian Gulf, was mostly caused with people’s interest and curiosity in the new kind of transport. The Dubai Metro trains, which can travel at the speed of 110 km/h, are unmanned.

For the time being, the city has ten metro stations. The Dubai Metro will have two lines – the red line and the green line. There will be 29 stations on the red line, including four underground stations. The green line will have 18 stations, seven of which are built under the ground, RIA Novosti reports with reference to The National newspaper.

All other stations are to be opened by February 2010.

The new transportation system became a great relief for air passengers and tourists. They now can pay ten times as less for their transportation. A ride in the Dubai Metro costs 2.3 dirhams (about 60 cents).

The cost of the metro construction project is evaluated at 28 billion dirhams ($7.6 billion). The metro tracks built for the unmanned trains will be the longest in the world.

The metro opens at 6:00 a.m. and operates till 24:00 daily, except Friday. On Friday, the metro opens at 2:00 p.m. and runs through 24:00.
