Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon wins elections to the post of chairman of Likud, a major party of the country

Prime minister of Israel Ariel Sharon was officially called winner at the elections to the post of chairman of Likud, a major party of the country. According to the final results, summed up by the election commission Sharon received 55.8 percent of votes and his main rival, ex-premier Benjamin Netanyahu - 40.08 percent. The third candidate to the post of Likud chairman, leader of the right wing of the Jewish Leadership party Moshe Feiglin received 3.46 percent of votes.

Taking part in the elections were 45 percent of party members.
