USA plans to encircle Russia with missiles and radars
02/05/2010 [article] / World / Europe

Which could be the targets for interceptor missiles in Romania? North Korea is too far. The distance from Romania to Iran is closer than from Poland or the Czech Republic, but the rogue state is too far anyway. NATO has such a member as Turkey, which borders on Iran. Why not building a missile base there?

A base for US Patriot missiles may appear in Poland, near the territory of Russia’s Kaliningrad enclave, already next year. The base will most likely be built about 100 kilometers far from the Russian border. It was originally planned that the US missiles and technical personnel would be deployed on the outskirts of Warsaw. It turned out later that the location had been moved closer to the Russian border. The explanation for such a move was rather vague

US army bases will appear on the Black Sea Coast, in Bulgaria and Romania. The US Military Academy at West Point has recently launched extensive courses to study the Russian culture and language. They started teaching the Iraqi culture and the Arab language three years before invading Iraq.

George W. Bush was outspoken in his intentions. His policies evoked irritation and rejection. Obama's administration is more diplomatic. However, Russia should not underestimate the danger that might be hidden in the new missile defense doctrine. "Those who say we are scrapping missile defense in Europe are either misinformed or misrepresenting what we are doing," US Defense Secretary Robert Gates said

US President Barack Obama stated in his recent interview with CBS that Russia's paranoid views about the missile defense system in Europe had not shown influence on his decision to shelve the plans of the previous US administration to deploy missile defense system elements in Poland and the Czech Republic. "Russia had always been paranoid about this, but George Bush was right," Obama said

Europe originally was not thrilled about the deployment of interceptor missiles and radar station in Poland and the Czech Republic. Most European leaders could only make vague statements over the pressure from the previous US administration. Many leaders of the European Union saw the missile defense project in Europe as a Cold War vestige. Russia promised to take adequate measures in return and deploy Iskander missile complexes in the Kaliningrad enclave

The United States is prepared to turn down the idea of deploying missile defense system elements in the Czech Republic. It is not ruled out that the decision appears to be a consequence of the slow development of Iran's missile program. Obama needs to focus on first priority issues. One should not spend tax-payers' money on everything. The missile shield in Poland and the Czech Republic is not a vital issue. Bush would take up everything - Afghanistan, Iraq, Georgia, missile defense, and he was not successful in all of those areas

The US Missile Defense System, a stumbling block in Russia-American bilateral relations, may prove to be the most expensive fraud of the present century. American physicists claim that the system has not been created as yet. They warned US President Barack Obama about it prior to his visit to Russia. The scientists, members of hundreds of military projects, urged Obama to forgo the plans to deploy elements of the US missile defense system in Europe

The politics of the US administration in the field of the ballistic missile defense will not be changed much, Brad Roberts, an official with the US Defense Department said. The Pentagon does not exclude alternative locations for the deployment of the missile defense system in Europe, but the United States will not take account of Russia's concerns at this point

Israel and USA tested the Ballistic Missile Defense Systems Hetz in the Pacific Ocean. Missile Defense Agency director Lt.-Gen. Patrick J. O’Reilly reported that the aim was to test the Hetz ability to shoot down the missiles with a range of more than 1,000 km. O’Reilly explained that Israel had designed the system to defend itself against possible ballistic missile attacks from Iran and Syria. The USA invested in the development of the system over one billion dollars
