Georgia declares war on South Ossetia
03/23/2009 [article] / World / Former USSR

Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili was the initiator of the military aggression against South Ossetia. Such a conclusion was made by the European Commission which had been investigating the reasons of the war in the republic. The reason for such a conclusion was the secret order issued by Mikhail Saakashvili

US leading experts analyzed punishing opportunities of both Russia and the West after the recent armed conflict in Georgia. Specialists came to conclusion that the list of potential Western sanctions pales in comparison with what Moscow could do in response. However, the US administration hopes that Russia will not resort to radical measures not to harm its own financial and security interests

Long-term consequences of the recent events in the Caucasus are still unclear. The sides involved in the conflict have said everything that they considered necessary to say under the current political situation. The unrecognized republics of South Ossetia and Abkhazia have survived another bloody conflict with Georgia. The conflict has proved that it is absolutely impossible for the three nations to live within the borders of one legal state. It means that the two republics will ask Moscow to recognize their independence again

Russia has informed Norway of its intention to completely cut back its military cooperation with NATO. The statement was made the next day after the emergency meeting of NATO ministers on the situation in Georgia and South Ossetia. The ministers agreed not to end their ties with Russia, although the future cooperation would depend on Russia’s pullout from Georgia. NATO members did not decline their cooperation with Russia despite USA’s appeals

NATO hit the USA in the face. Its allies said that they were not going to scale down their cooperation with Moscow. The statement showed that the USA was no longer NATO’s master and that Washington was not the city where all fundamental decisions were made. The USA continues to wage the informational war against Russia. Americans are now acting indirectly, through Georgia. They have no true allies left except for several countries of East Europe, which they support financially. It is an open secret that politics can be very dirty, just like prostitution. However, it is impossible to bribe everyone.

Condoleezza Rice said that Russia “was playing a very dangerous game” with the USA and its allies. The Secretary of State emphasized that the United States would not allow Moscow to win in Georgia, destabilize Europe and draw a new Iron Curtain through the continent. Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said that Russia would strike a destructive blow against any external force which may attack Russian citizens. “If someone may think that they can murder our citizens, kill our soldiers and officers, who act as peacemakers, we will never let this happen. Anyone, who tries to do it, will face a destructive blow from Russia,” he said

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev stated Sunday that Russia would begin to withdraw its troops from Georgia on August 18. The decision marked Moscow’s initiative in the implementation of the document originally signed by Dmitry Medvedev and French President Nicolas Sarkozy. It seems that Georgia does not intend to abide by its obligations. Nothing has been reported about Georgia’s plans to pull out its troops from the conflict zone. It was said that Georgia was developing a massive provocation against Russia in the town of Gori

The BBC has recently aired a TV report, in which Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili ate his tie. The report was about the situation in the area of the conflict between Georgia and South Ossetia. The footage showed Saakashvili making a call to a top Western official. It could be clearly seen that Mr. Saakashvili was having a nervous breakdown. Needless to say that it will never occur to either Mr. Bush or Ms. Condoleezza Rice to speak about the nightmare that thousands of South Ossetian residents had to experience after Georgia’s attack on the republic. They do not want even to hear about it

Presidents of the unrecognized republics of North and South Ossetia, Sergei Bagapsh and Eduard Kokoity, intend to strive for the international recognition of their small nations. S. Ossetian President Eduard Kokoity stated that Georgia used mercenaries from several countries during its aggression against his nation. “There were many mercenaries from Ukraine and the Baltic states. We have found dead bodies of African Americans too,” he said

“We realize and everyone writes about it that Georgia today is a special project of the USA. We understand that the USA worries about the fate of this project,” Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said. Eduard Shevardnadze, a former Georgian president, said in an interview with Rheinischer Merkur that the current situation would not have occurred if the Georgian military had not invaded Tskhinvali.
