Manchester City painted Manchester blue for the first time since 1968, pushed to the wire by a gallant foe, United, the team which now claims the record number of points for the second place (89). This is the last week for the European leagues and cups - the climax coming on Wednesday in Bayern's clash with Chelsea in the Champions League Final.

It went to the last match, the last minute - so much so that some of the Manchester City fans who had abandoned the stadium heard the cheers from inside after the late strikes gave the club the championship over rivals United and tried to get back in. Manchester City scored two injury-time goals to beat ten-man QPR 3-2 and so claim the three points needed to jump above United, whose game at Sunderland had ended 0-1 in United's favour. Arsenal retain third place with a 3-2 away win at West Bromwich Albion. Tottenham follow in fourth with a 2-0 win against Fulham. Newcastle terminate an excellent campaign going down 3-1 at an equally remarkable Everton FC. Chelsea's win over Blackburn consigns the team to the Championship along with Wolves (which stupidly sacked McCarthy) and Bolton.

Spanish Primera Liga

Real reached the record 100 points, Mourinho praised his team with an obmar in front of the dais and wins four championships in four different countries - one behind Yugoslav legend Tomislav Ivic. Real ended the campaign beating Mallorca 4-1 and Barcelona drew 2-2 at Betis, Messi taking the crown for most goals over Cristiano Ronaldo. Valencia lost the last game at Real Sociedad 1-0, Malaga beat Gijón 1-0, Atlético won at Villarreal 1-0 and Levante crowned a good season with a 3-0 win against Athletic Bilbao.

Vítor Pereira fulfils his objectives in FC Porto with another Championship and Supercup, ending the Portuguese Premier League 6 points clear of Benfica. FC Porto thrashed Rio Ave away 5-2; Benfica beat Vitória (Setúbal) 3-1 away, while Sporting received Braga and won 3-2. Marítimo drew 1-1 with Paços de Ferreira, Vitória Guimarães lost at home to Académica de Coimbra which manages to survive and plays in the Portuguese Cup Final with Sporting CP. Nacional, the other Madeira team in this division, beat Leiria 3-2.
