Russians show their unity to counter Western pressure

On November 4th, Russia marked National Unity Day. A mass rally under the slogan "We are one!" was held in Moscow. As many as 75,000 people took part in the rally, representatives of the Moscow police department said. The column of demonstrators was more than two kilometers long.

The procession started at 14.00 on Moscow's Pushkinskaya Square. The participants of the demonstration were holding flags of various political parties, public organizations and Russian regions. There were also flags of Novorossiya, Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics.

It is worth noting that representatives of all four parliamentary parties took part in the action for the first time in years.

Secretary of the General Council of United Russia, State Duma Deputy Speaker Sergei Neverov, Communist Party leader Gennady Zyuganov, LDPR leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky, Just Russia chairman Sergei Mironov delivered their speech to the demonstrators. All the leaders emphasised the importance of the unity of all Russian citizens.

Many participants of the rally we wearing St. George's ribbons. There was a group of people who were carrying a large St. George's ribbon that was 25 meters long. People were holding slogans "We are one", "Unity is our strength," "Many people - one motherland," "No to Fascism", "Putin, we are with you," "Bear is the master in the forest."

It was noticeable that many participants of the rally came to the demonstration with their families.

"This holiday should be conducted in our country. This is a celebration of the unity of the peoples, and, given our multinational country, such a holiday should be. The political color? It's just a token of time , in my opinion. No matter what happens in Russia, the holiday of the unity of the peoples is important, because the unity of the peoples of our country is the foundation upon which the entire state sits," one of the demonstrators, Sangadzhi Tarbaev, member of KVN Club, told Pravda.Ru.

"Given the recent events, I think, there is consolidation going on inside the country. On the one hand, it seems to be supported by government agencies. On the other hand, the people and the society share the wish of the state to consolidate too," he added.

"Internal political forces and civil society forces, small nations living in Russia aspire to it as well. They want to feel like a big family. I am a representative of the Kalmyk people. It's pleasant for me that I can go out quietly wearing the Kalmyk costume, walk around the city, tell other people something about Kalmykia, learn something about other nationalities. I think that this unification is what our country needs," said Tarbaev.

Many thousands of people took part in numerous demonstrations on the National Unity Day of November 4th. The largest actions took place in St. Petersburg, Sevastopol, Kazan, Grozny, Chelyabinsk and other cities. Journalists covering the demonstrations noted that it was the first time, when they saw so many demonstrators for the National Unity Day.

National Unity Day  is national holiday in the Russian Federation held on November 4. It commemorates the popular uprising which expelled Polish occupation forces from Moscow in November 1612, and more generally the end of the Time of Troubles and the Polish-Muscovite War (1605-1618). The day's name alludes to the idea that all classes of Russian society united to preserve Russian statehood when there was neither a tsar nor a patriarch to guide them. President Vladimir Putin reestablished the holiday in order to replace the commemoration of the October Revolution, known as The Day of Great October Socialist Revolution during Soviet period and as The Day of Accord and Conciliation in post-Soviet times, which formerly took place on November 7.
