Tom Cruise prepares to eat placenta and umbilical cord of his first biological child

Tom Cruise and his fiancee Katie Holmes became happy parents today (see pictures here). Katie Holmes delivered a girl who has been named Suri. She weighed 3.4 kilograms. The name Suri means 'princess' in Hebrew and 'red rose' in Persian, according to Cruise's publicist.

The child is the first natural child for Cruise, 43, and Holmes, 27. But Cruise has two adopted children -- Isabella, 13, and Connor, 11 -- who live with his former wife, Nicole Kidman (pictures). The birth was rumoured to be silent, as per the rules of the Church of Scientology that requires a child to arrive in a calm, peaceful world, rediff.com reports.

Scientologists believe words spoken during times of pain are recorded by the “reactive mind” and can potentially cause problems for mother and baby later in life. A spokesman from the Church of Scientology International declined comment and referred inquiries to Cruise’s publicist, khaleejtimes.com says.

The couple's fame and gilded romantic histories were not the only reason they courted so much media interest, however. The pair is from different religious backgrounds: Cruise is a Scientologist and has said Holmes has adopted his religion. He has denied rumors that her Catholic parents disapprove of their match as steadfastly as he has denied rumors of their breakup, which started percolating not long after her pregnancy became public in October, LA Times reports.

Cruise and Holmes - or TomKat, as the tabloids dubbed them - have been ecstatic about their relationship to the press since they began dating in April. The couple got engaged at the top of the Eiffel Tower in June (see "Tom Cruise Proposes To Katie Holmes At Eiffel Tower" ) and announced their pregnancy in October (see "Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes Expecting Their First Child" ), MTV.com says.

Cruise hopped up and down on a couch during an interview with Oprah Winfrey as he professed his love. "I can't be cool. I can't be laid-back," he declared, according to Seattle Times.

However the birth of Suri didn’t happen without a scandal.

Actor Tom Cruise just keeps on getting on weirder and weirder…he has recently vowed to eat the placenta of his unborn child. Cruise believes that the placenta and umbilical cord will be nutritious and delicious…however, he may have to get his extremely heavily pregnant fiancee Katie Holmes to give birth first, entertainmentwise.com says.

According to The Mirror, Cruise said: “I’m gonna eat the placenta. I thought that would be good. Very nutritious. I’m gonna eat the cord and the placenta right there.”

Ironically, Suri was born the same day as Brooke Shields’ daughter, Grier Hammond Henchy. Shields and Cruise had a public spat last year after he criticized the actress for taking antidepressants following the birth of her first child. Appearing on the “Today” show, Cruise said there was no such thing as chemical imbalances that need to be corrected with drugs, and that depression could be treated with exercise and vitamins, according to khaleejtimes.com
