Cuba reaffirms desire to extend and promote use of social networks

Cuban Minister of Information and Communications reported that the Government's intention is to guide a Caribbean service network to provide greater benefit to the group. He emphasized that will include working on projects to improve connectivity in educational and scientific institutions.


Cuba's government on Wednesday confirmed its willingness to extend and promote use of social networks in the Caribbean country, in order to provide more  information  to benefit the community through information and communications services.

This was announced by the head of the Ministry of Information and Communications, Maimir Mesa, who said that the sense of the strategy is to prioritize Internet points linked to social and community development, such as schools and scientific institutions .

"We work on projects such as the commissioning of the Public Data Center and email platform, and to improve connectivity," he said during the presentation of an annual report to the plenary of the National Assembly of  deputies.

He also said that parallel to the optimization of digital services, the Government is advancing Caribbean security and network protection, "on which we create a general awareness of its importance," he said.

Similarly, adding that studies are ongoing and projects to reduce costs in mobile phone service are underway, and that, together with the generalization of the "calling party pays" plan and the extension of the useful life of the acquired lines, are on the agenda for 2013.

Furthermore, with respect to the tuning of network use with the updated Cuban socio-economic model.

Mesa said new missions in the areas of telecommunications, broadcasting, postal services, and computer technicians will be developed.

The modernization process includes structural changes to the Ministry and the normative basis, said the official, who said the addition of new non-state forms of management, such as the postal agency and telecommunication activities with expectations of a favorable impact on the community .

Regarding current experiences of the social use of the Internet, he emphasized the Joven Club, available in the 15 Cuban provinces about 600 facilities with a total of more than 6,700 computers.

According to the minister, since its inception in September 1987, this initiative has graduated in different courses a figure greater than three million people.
