Removal of Nuclear Fuel from Kursk Submarine Put on Hold

The operation to remove nuclear fuel from the reactors of the Kursk nuclear submarine at the Nerpa shipyard in Snezhnogorsk in the Murmansk Region, which was scheduled for Sunday, has been postponed. According to representatives from the Nerpa shipyard, the operation was halted because the shipyard's main experts are currently busy removing radioactive waste from the Northern Fleet's K-19 submarine. The Kursk's reactor block is being stored in the shipyard's dry dock.

The shipyard's management, local environmental agencies, and officials from Snezhnogorsk's mayor's office are all of the opinion that the Kursk does not currently represent any threat to the town's residents, the shipyard's workers, or military specialists.
