Built in 1963, it is one of the oldest County Prisons in California.

The Men's Central Jail houses a variety of criminals that commit class A and B Misdemeanors and Felonies which includes crimes such as Aggravated Assult on an Officer, Vandalism, Burglary, Illegal possession of a firearm, and many more types of crimes.

In May 2013, along with the adjacent Twin Towers Correctional Facility, Men's Central Jail ranked as one of the ten worst prisons in the United States, based on reporting in Mother Jones magazine

The jail is divided among many floors all for their assortment of inmates

Floors will be designated to house general population, protective custody, homosexual, medically ill and high security inmates. Men's Central Jail acts as a large and bustling jail tending to the needs of a large scale of inmates.
