Azerbaijani and Armenian Presidents to discuss settling territorial conflict

A meeting of Armenian President Robert Kocharyan and Azerbaijani PresidentGeidar Aliyev will take place in the Naxcivan part of theArmenian-Azerbaijani border today. At the ARKA news agency reported, thePresidents agreed to have this meeting during a telephone conversation onAugust 6, 2002. At this meeting, the parties are to discuss peacefulsettlement of the Karabakh conflict. As Aliyev stressed, both partiesinitiated this meeting, the Trend news agency reported.The latest meeting of the two presidents took place in Moscow on November30, 2001, within the summit of leaders of the CIS countries. RussianPresident Vladimir Putin participated in it.The Karabakh conflict started in 1988, when the Nagorny Karabakh region,inhabited mostly by Armenians, announced its separation from Azerbaijan inaccordance with law of the USSR. Active military operations were ceased onMay 12, 1994, after signing an agreement on establishing the regime ofceasefire, which had been observed so far..
