US lawmakers want to intercept French Mistral helicopter carriers from Russia

U.S. lawmakers suggested NATO should outbid Russia in purchasing Mistral helicopter carriers from France.

In a letter to NATO Secretary General, the senators said that "it would be a strong signal to President Putin that NATO allies are not going to tolerate or in any way condone his reckless steps."

The signatories of the message believe that if NATO could, if not buy, then rent the  Mistral vessels. This would help to increase the military potential of the organization, US lawmakers said.

Noteworthy, the U.S. and several European countries have asked France to reconsider the contract for the supply of high-tech military hardware, including two helicopters, to Moscow.

French officials said that terminating the contract would be possible. However, the country preferred not to do it, fearing considerable fines.
