Cesar Gaviria, the Secretary-General of the OAS, has requested the opposition in Venezuela not to place the process of dialogue with the government of Hugo Chavez at risk, urging them not to go ahead with their general strike, which is planned for 2nd December.

It will be remembered that the coup d’etat last April followed a general strike organised by the same political groupings. Cesar Gaviria declared that “It is important that the decisions taken by the Opposition, especially the strike, do not place at risk the understanding with the government”.

The opposition is mainly supported by the middle classes in Venezuela, which have been hard hit by the global economic crisis.
