Germany Tries To Find Those Guilty of Love Parade Stampede

The day after a mass panic at a techno music festival left 19 people crushed to death and 342 injured, police, officials and witnesses on Sunday were pointing fingers over who was to blame.

German media reported that as many as 1.4 million people showed up Saturday to the Love Parade. The festival venue was an old freight railway station that local news outlets estimated could handle 300,000 people.

Police blamed organizers and officials in Duisburg, as some said the city isn't big enough to handle such an event, Dallas Morning News reports.

The town's flags were at half mast today as organisers said the annual event would never be held again "out of respect for the victims and their families".

"The Love Parade was always a peaceful event and a happy party," said Rainer Schaller, the head of the festival's organising company Lopavent, NEWS.com.au reports.
