UN Security Council coordinates resolution on Boeing crash

The work on the draft resolution of the United Nations Security Council on the crash of Boeing 777 in eastern Ukraine is complete. The vote is scheduled for 15:00 New York time.

Russia's permanent representative to the UN, Vitaly Churkin, called the 1.5-hour negotiations "useful", during which members of the Security Council were bringing together two texts of the resolution - the Russian and the Australian ones. "I think it was a useful session. We have developed something, so we will see how it works tomorrow," he said. As reported by diplomats, the base for the final draft resolution was the Australian text, in which fragments of the Russian paper were introduced.

Prior to the meeting of the Security Council, Vitaly Churkin told journalists why the Russian delegation was not satisfied with the text prepared by Australian counterparts. "We are concerned that it does not reflect clearly the need for impartial international investigation," said the diplomat. According to him, this is why Russia proposed its own draft resolution, which involves the participation of the International Civil Aviation Organization. According to Churkin, ICAO is a suitable organization to clarify the circumstances of the crash of the Boeing. "ICAO has the necessary experience. They are not a party of this difficult situation in Ukraine. So we believe that this is the only way," said the diplomat.
