NATO Secretary General George Robertson has described the concept of joint peacekeeping operations with Russia as a major landmark.

According to RIA Novosti, the political component of this idea was agreed on Friday during the course of a meeting of the Russia-NATO Council. As chairman of the Russia-NATO Council, it was Robertson who made the declaration, which described the document agreed in the meeting as a new contribution to the achievement of security and stability in Europe and the Atlantic region.

Now that the political parts of the plan have been agreed, a special working group will continue to work through suggestions regarding combined peacekeeping operations. The NATO Secretary General reported that the members of the Russia-NATO council had decided to send copies of the document to member states of the Euro-Atlantic partnership, and also the UN, the OSCE and European Union.

Robertson observed that the maintenance of peace is one of nine priorities for cooperation chosen by heads of state and government leaders from NATO members and Russia during the meeting in Rome on May 28, when they created the Russia-Nato Council.
