Iraqis shocked by Abu Ghraib’s photos

Iraqis are expressing shock and anger at the photos of prisoner abuse at Abu Ghraib broadcast on SBS television.

The graphic pictures were taken at the same time as photographs that sparked the original prisoner abuse scandal, but have only just been released under freedom of information action in the US.

They have since been widely re-broadcast across the world.

Iraq's Ambassador to the United Nations, Samir al-Sumidaie, says measures are in place to ensure there is no repeat of the abuse.

"We have now a regime in place which allows Iraqi officials who are concerned with human rights to be fully informed on treatment, to have access to prisoners and to conduct surprise visits to Abu Ghraib and other camps," he said.

"So these are the measures that will ensure I hope that no further practice like this will take place," reports SBS.
