Albania says Kosovo independence will be important for Europe’s progress

Moisiu, who is on an official two-day visit to Hungary, expressed hope that Kosovo would soon become an independent state and added that Albania intended to contribute to the process.

The statement comes with U.N.-mediated talks under way between predominantly ethnic Albanian Kosovo and Serbia over the future status of the province. Ethnic Albanians want Kosovo to become independent; Serbs want it to remain part of Serbia.

The independence drive could be further boosted by the fact that Montenegro, another former member of the Yugoslav federation, recently gained sovereignty.

At the Thursday meeting, Albanian and Hungarian undersecretaries of the energy and economics ministries signed an agreement to boost cooperation.

The two countries have maintained close relations in recent years. Then-President Ferenc Madl visited Albania in 2005.
