A diesel-powered Indian submarine exploded and sank early Wednesday in a dock in Mumbai, leaving rescuers scrambling to find 18 sailors who were on board. The accident comes just days after New Delhi trumpeted the launch of its first domestically produced aircraft carrier and the start of sea trials for its first Indian-made nuclear submarine, reports Tuoitrenews.

Many of the salors on the NS Sindhurakshak submarine attempted to jump to safety and some of the wounded have been rushed to a hospital. The cause of the explosion and fire and the extent of damage are unknown, according to China.org.cn.
