States - Parties To Treaty Of Collective Security Do Not Need Military Strengthening Of Their Southern Frontiers

The states - parties to the Collective Security Treaty (CST) do not need to deploy additional military units in their southern frontiers, Secretary General of the Collective Security Council (CSC) of the CST Valery Nikolayenko told journalists on Wednesday after his meeting with president of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev. According to him, the presidents of Tajikistan and Kazakhstan confirmed that they controlled the situation. This notwithstanding, Nikolayenko noted, intensive training and formation of battalions of CST collective rapid deployment forces in the Central-Asian region are under way so that they could, if necessary, be used to ensure security. Speaking of his meeting with Nazarbayev, Nikolayenko said that they discussed the fulfilment of the decisions to set up collective rapid deployment forces in the Central-Asian region. In the opinion of the CSC Secretary General, the abatement of the attempts by bandit formations to penetrate into the region facilitated their formation. Furthermore, taking in consideration the developments in Afghanistan, the sides discussed the intensification of foreign-policy interaction and coordination of measures to normalize the situation. Issues related to setting up an Afghan government which would be friendly to all CIS member states were also touched upon.
