Dissatisfaction With Presence Of Afghan Refugees Grows In Pakistan

The local population in Pakistan, mainly Pashtoons, in the areas bordering on Afghanistan, come out for the earliest possible expulsion of all the refugees from the country. As the newspaper Frontier post reports, the Pakistani authorities are seriously afraid of the beginning of interethnnic disturbances. According to the data of the newspaper, a certain public movement for the liberation of the country from the Afghan refugees has been founded in the town of Dira. The first demand of the Dira inhabitants addressed to the local administration was to place the Afghans into isolated camps and then to send them home. This dissatisfaction has been caused partially by economic factors - the majority of poor Afghans agree to work for a lower payment, thus occupying the jobs of local inhabitants. At the same time, some Afghans, a considerable number of them, have become successful in business, which creates rivalry to Pakistani salesmen and entrepreneurs, the newspaper points out. Another strong irritant is the information and the rumours about mass executions of the Pakistani volunteers (Pashtoons) by units of the Northern Alliance after the latter have captured Kabul, Mazar-i-Sharif, Kunduz and other Afghan cities.
