Explosion at army weapon depots in southern Albania, at least two people injured

The explosions started at about 1 p.m. (1100GMT) in six army weapon depots holding ammunition that was to be destroyed. It was unclear what triggered the explosions.

Two army officers who were near the explosion were injured, army Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Pellumb Qazimi said.

However a top police officer, Dashnor Kaja of the nearby Gjirokastra city, said three were injured, and one may have died.

Explosions were continuing at the depots, located in Dhemblaj village, 180 kilometers (112 miles) south of capital, Tirana.

People were evaucated from the area, and advised to stay in well-protected areas, Qazimi said.

"It is not easy to go there because it is not an easy terrain," Qazimi said, adding the ongoing explosions were "with lower intensity."

Smoke was seen high in the sky from kilometers (miles) away.

Local farmers said shells had gone as far as 5 kilometers (3 miles) in other villages, according to News24 television station
