Nicaragua's Ortega wants part of Costa Rican territory back

Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega announced his intention to appeal to the UN International Court of Justice to return the province of Guanacaste of Costa Rica back to Nicaragua, Agence France -Presse reports.

Guanacaste became the territory of Costa Rica 200 years ago. The territory is located approximately 270 kilometers from the capital, San Jose. The province accounts for about 20 percent of the territory of the country. Ortega reminded that Costa Rica did not obtain the territory under the decision of the International Court.

Ortega originally wanted to discuss the return of the "occupied" province with President of Costa Rica, Laura Chinchilla, but the latter flatly declined any negotiations on this issue.

Guanacaste that was separated from Nicaragua in 1814 is a popular tourist destination in Central America.
