Russia to estimate influence of US-USSR agreement on delimitation of maritime borders on fish industry
The Audit Chamber of Russian Federation will check the influence of the Soviet-American agreement of June 1, 1990 on delimitation of maritime borders in the Bering and Chukotka seas (north-east of the Asian part of Russia) on the Russian fish industry.
The check will be carried out in compliance with the address of the Federation Council members from November 10th till December 20th, as RIA Novosti learned in the Audit Chamber.
The address, examined by the Collegium, says the change of maritime borders between the two countries has resulted in annual losses of more than $200 million for Russia.
The Agreement on delimitation of maritime borders of the USSR and the USA was signed in 1990 by US Secretary of State James Baker and USSR Foreign Minister Eduard Shevardnadze. As a result the USA received a 200-mile area of Russia's coastal zone in the Bering and Chukotka Seas.
The total losses of the Russian fish industry over 12 years have amounted to 2.8 million tons of pollack, according to expert estimations, quoted by the Russian Foreign Ministry.
The Agreement is not in line with the national interests of Russia as it breaks the traditionally set maritime borders between the USSR and the USA, the Russian senators believe.
The US Congress ratified the agreement while the Russian parliament never adopted the document.
