First Alian's Father Dead at 63

U.S. science-fiction film screenwriter Dan O'Bannon, whose works included the "Alien" movies, has died at age 63 in Santa Monica, Calif.

O'Bannon, who died Thursday, had suffered from Crohn's disease.

O'Bannon also worked with director John Carpenter on 1974's "Dark Star" and did effects work on the science-fiction classic "Star Wars." His film credits also included "Blue Thunder," "Lifeforce," "Invaders From Mars" and "Total Recall." His directorial debut came in the form of "Return of the Living Dead" in 1985.

"Dan had an enormous talent and an acerbic, biting wit," Carpenter said of O'Bannon. "He had a very high IQ, but I think he was under-appreciated and under-served by the film business. He took a stand against all manner of authority."

O'Bannon is survived by wife, Diane Lindley O'Bannon, and his son, Adam.

UPI has contributed to the report.
