Actor and Pig Protest Against Iraqi War

The conflict between the USA and Iraq causes many protests of public organizations as well as of individual persons. A Belgian actor is going to demonstrate his protest against the US-led war campaign in Iraq by sitting in one cage together with a pig. Benjamin Verdonk from Antwerp can’t stay aloof when the world is on the verge of another war. To demonstrate his personal opinion concerning events in the world, the actor decided to organize an unusual protest action in a museum in the city of Gent.

A huge cage will be fixed near the window of the museum; the actor and one more element of the composition, a pig, will sit in the cage. The cage will be arranged so that all passers-by could see the actor and the pig from the street.

The idea of organizing such a performance is based upon a similar exposition of 1974, when an actor locked himself in a cage together with a coyote. The slogan of Verdonk’s protest action is as follows: “I love America, and America loves me.” The actor plans to stay in the cage within three days. And all the days long, he will drink, eat and sleep staying close to the pig. And Benjamin will relieve himself on a special litter in the corner of the cage, together with the pig as well.

The actor says, he is very much disturbed with the increasing political tension in the world. “I cannot understand what is going on in the world at all. There is so much discussion, and still there are lots of viewpoints on the problem. I cannot get an adequate answer to my question from people, that is why I decided to obtain it from a pig,” Benjamin says.
