A precarious financial position and the likelihood of losing a job are the things most feared by Muscovites. This answer to a question, "What do you fear the most?", was given by 25.8 per cent of those surveyed in a telephone poll, held in August by Russia's ROMIR independent research centre. The centre is concerned with public opinion and market studies. As many as 500 Muscovites aged over 18 were interviewed.

A total of 16.2 per cent replied they feared losing their near and dear ones most. The third thing most feared by residents of the Russian capital is "preponderance of people of non-Russian nationalities" and a nuclear war. These problems make fearful 6.8 per cent of those polled.

The pollsters found out that men and women experience different fears. Men mainly dread losing their jobs, and fear betrayal, nuclear war and natural disasters. Women, on the other hand, are frightened by rampant crime, approaching old age, loneliness, and they are concerned about their children's future.
