World's first-ever penis transplantation surgery successful

The world's first-ever penis transplantation surgery that was conducted in South Africa has ended successfully. The surgery itself took place on December 11, 2014. Three months of supervision over the 21-year-old patient have finally proved that the surgery was a success, Pravda.Ru reports. 

The man, who received "new assets" is now no different than his peers. His new penis, just like any other normal male reproductive organ is capable of erection, ejaculation and orgasm, Cape Town surgeon, who conducted the operation said. 

Three years ago, the patient's penis had to be amputated when the young man developed severe complications after a traditional circumcision. The surgery was necessary to save the man's life. Although there are no formal records on the number of penile amputations per year due to traditional circumcision, one study reported up to 55 cases in the Eastern Cape alone. According to experts' estimates as many as 250 men have to have their penises amputated in the country every year, Pravda.Ru says. 

The surgery to attach the new penis continued for nine hours.  

The breakthrough may help those men who have lost their penises from penile cancer or as a last-resort treatment for severe erectile dysfunction due to medication side effects.
