Russian zoos put forward a new way for residents and vendors to get rid of Christmas trees. One can bring the trees (natural only, of course) to the zoos, where the trees will be used to feed zoo animals.

The majority of Russians simply throw their Christmas trees out after the holidays. However, many zoos across Russia asked people to act more responsibly.

The action to collect Christmas trees is in effect in the Moscow zoo too. It was said reported that elephants, ungulates and primates find conifers tasty. The Moscow zoo accepts Christmas trees from people each year, saying that animals use pine branches as toys, not to mention the fact that such food serves as a source of vitamins for animals.

Following the Moscow zoo, a similar campaign was launched in the zoos of Chelyabinsk and Tomsk. The practice is also common in Germany and Ukraine.

Zoologists ask the people who want to give the trees away to the zoos, to remove all decorations from the trees, because they can harm animals.
