Author Mary Gordon wins $20,000 Story Prize, given to writers of short fiction

Mary Gordon, author of several works of fiction and nonfiction, has won the third annual Story Prize for short fiction. Gordon will receive $20,000 (EUR15,139) for "The Stories of Mary Gordon," prize organizers announced.

Finalists Rick Bass, for "The Lives of Rocks," and George Saunders, for "In Persuasion Nation," will each receive $5,000 (EUR3,785), organizers announced Wednesday.

Gordon's many other books include the novels "Final Payments" and "Pearl," a biography of Joan of Arc, and a memoir about her father, "Shadow Man," reports AP. 

The Story Prize was founded by philanthropist Julie Lindsey and editor Larry Dark, who has worked on story anthologies. Previous winners are Patrick O'Keeffe's "The Hill Road" and Edwidge Dandicat's "The Dew Breaker."
