Japanese researchers to blast space debris

Japanese researchers from the Riken Institute are going to shoot space debris that fills outer space.

500,000 pieces of debris currently threaten satellites in orbit.

Thus, Japan researchers worked out a special method, which will enable them to eliminate 3,000 tons of debris using a fiber optic laser.

Once the debris is detected with an infrared telescope of the European Space Agency's Extreme Universe Space Observatory (EUSO), it will be shot down with a fiber-based laser system, so that it is knocked out of the orbit and destroyed while entering the atmosphere of the planet.

"The new method combining these two instruments will be capable of tracking down and deorbiting the most dangerous space debris, around the size of one centimeter."
