This year's total solar eclipse will take place this upcoming night. Russia will not be able to witness the remarkable phenomenon. It will be possible to enjoy the total eclipse only in the north of Australia or from the Pacific Ocean.

Total eclipse of the Sun will begin at 19:37 GMT on 13 November (23:37 Moscow time), when the penumbra of the Moon touches the Earth. Approximately an hour later, at 20:35 GMT, the complete phase will begin - the Moon's shadow will start its way from the north coast of Australia, from the point about 150 kilometers west of Darwin.

A group of Russian scientists left for Australia from Irkutsk to observe the phenomenon. The group consists of scientists from across the country, reports Sibnovosti.ru. The Russian astronomers plan to observe the total solar eclipse to obtain new information on solar activity, the changes of which do not line up with expectations.

The expedition will be based in the city of Cairns. According to Glob-news.ru, the group will be divided afterwards: a part of the group plans to watch the eclipse in the Pacific Ocean off the island Fitzroy. The expedition is organized by the Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics and the Observatory of the Irkutsk State University.

The first eclipse in 2012 was annular: the Moon was farther away from the Earth, so the lunar disk did not cover the sun completely during the eclipse, leaving the "ring of fire" on the sky. The sky spectacle could be seen in the western U.S., China and Japan.
