AvtoVAZ to cut back on personnel

Russia's car giant AvtoVAZ is considering the possibility of cutting back its staff, AvtoVAZ President and General Director Vitaly Vilchik reported. A source at the factory told RBC that the reduction in personnel would be one of the steps aimed at improving the efficiency of the company's work and cutting back expenditures. Vilchik stressed that the reduction would concern, first of all, the company's authorities, white-collars and auxiliary employees.

AvtoVAZ decided to stop some of its assembling lines from October 26 to November 9 due to low demand for VAZ cars. Some employees of the factories went on vacations. Due to the idle time, AvtoVAZ will produce about 743,000 cars in 2002 instead of the planned 770,000 cars.
