Russian Aluminium to Build Factory in Murmansk Region
Russian Aluminium intends to build a factory for producing virgin aluminum on the Kola Peninsula. This question was discussed yesterday in the Murmansk regional administration at a meeting between Governor Yuri Yevdokimov and representatives of Russian Aluminium.
Initial figures indicate that the factory will produce 300 thousand tonnes of metal per year. Its estimated cost is between USD 900 million and one billion, and it will create two to three thousand new jobs.
According to the governor's press office, Ivan Bokhmat, the director of energy management at Russian Aluminium, made clear at the meeting that the company's choice of the Murmansk Region for cooperation was no coincidence. He explained that it was linked to the availability of a large quantity of electricity at a reasonable price (a reference to the Kola nuclear power station, which produces cheap electricity). In addition, Bokhmat noted that the presence of two sea ports in the region will allow the company to significantly reduce transport costs.
In accordance with a protocol signed at the meeting, a working group will be created of representatives of the Murmansk Region, Russian Aluminium and nuclear power producer Rosenergoatom. The working group will decide on the location of the factory, and will also prepare an agreement on cooperation between all parties interested in the construction and running of the factory.
