Ecologists measure air pollution in Nizhny Novgorod

In the Nizhny Novgorod region, the Ministry for Ecology and Natural Resources started monitoring the industrial zones of Kanavinsky and Moskovsky districts of Nizhny Novgorod. The monitoring is being conducted on the instructions from Governor Valery Shantsev, which he issued as a result of an inspection visit to the oil and fat factory.

During the week, mobile ecological post PEP-1-1 GBU "Ecology of the Region" will be taking samples of air in industrial zones. Seven areas have been selected for sampling. In October 2012, the mobile post has already worked in the area of the Nizhny Novgorod oil and fat factory, "Oktyabr" factory and the Nizhny Novgorod metalworking plant. After the initial analysis, the level of the content of contaminating substances in the air remains within the norm. However, experts will conduct a more detailed analysis in laboratory. As a result, they will draw up a conclusion about the content of pollutants in the air and their sources.

Specialists will also be registering the appearance of unpleasant odors on the sites of inspection. On October 22, the governor along with the initiative group of citizens inspected the work to neutralize odors at the Nizhny Novgorod Oil and Fat Factory.

"In the industrial zone of the Moskovsky and Kanavinsky districts there are a number of other companies operating that can serve as sources of air pollution. I have instructed the Regional Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources to monitor the situation to see what other factories can be a source of odors," Valery Shantsev said.
