Kaliningrad Citizens Soon to Be Able to Travel to Baltic Coast by Trolleybus

An ambitious project, similar to the one in the Crimea, for a trolleybus service between regional centres and resorts on the Baltic coast is being planned in the Kaliningrad Region by Moscow-based company Energoinvest-centre. As a Rosbalt correspondent was informed today by the regional administration, an agreement has been signed with the company to cooperate on the modernisation and development of electrical transport in the region.

The federal programme for the socio-economic development of the Kaliningrad Region up to 2010 includes the production of trams and trolleybuses. According to Energoinvest-centre representatives, the latest creations of Russian transport designers will bring vehicles onto the market which are of European standards and yet cost five times less than similar imported vehicles. The enterprise is also planning to carry out a complete overhaul of its rolling-stock.

These environmentally friendly forms of transport are especially important in coastal resorts and for this reason there are a number of projects planned for the Baltic coast, where major resorts such as Svetlogorsk and Zelenogradsk are located. It is in these resorts that the new trolleybus service is being planned although no deadlines were set in the agreement for completion of the project.
